Aston Villa make loan offer for Burnley defender Ben Gibson – reports
Aston Villa have made an offer to sign Ben Gibson on loan from Burnley, reports claim. The 26-year-old has made just one Premier League appearance for Sean Dyche’s side since his £12million move from Middlesbrough last summer. According to Sky Sports News, Villa are hoping to strike a temporary deal with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season. Gibson became Burnley’s record signing in the summer, but after two hernia operations, he has failed to make his mark at Turf Moor. Villa chief executive Christian Purslow has publicly stated his reluctance to sign players on loan and return them to their parent clubs. Burnley…

Chelsea vs Tottenham player ratings: The best and worst from Carabao Cup clash at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea booked their place in the Carabao Cup final after beating Tottenham in a penalty shoot-out at Stamford Bridge. N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard put the Blues 2-1 up on aggregate before Fernando Llorente forced penalties. Eric Dier and Lucas Moura missed for the north Londoners and the home side were perfect from the spot to set up a date with Manchester City in the final next month. Chelsea: Kepa Arrizabalaga: No chance with Llorente’s close-range header. Saved very well from Moura at the key time in the shoot-out. 6 Cesar Azpilicueta: An assured performance as ever from the captain and blasted home perfect penalty. 6 Antonio Rudiger: Some timely…

Liverpool news: Rio Ferdinand ‘sensed nerves’ at Anfield as Reds failed to move clear of Manchester City in title race
Rio Ferdinand thought Liverpool players looked ‘nervous’ during their 1-1 draw with Leicester. The former Manchester United defender watched as the Reds blew a chance to go seven points clear at the top of the Premier League. Manchester City’s loss to Newcastle the day before put the Reds in the driving seat, but Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to capitalise. “The only slight worry I would have is I sense a nervousness and a team sitting there passing the buck at times,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “That is something Klopp will have to address. You don’t want to see nerves at this stage, this is early.” Sadio Mane gave Liverpool an…

Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan joins fellow Championship side Sheffield United on loan
Sheffield United have signed Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan on loan until the end of the season. The Blades fought off competition from a host of clubs, including Bristol City, to bring the misfiring forward to Bramall Lane. His arrival comes after Leon Clarke completed a move away from United, joining Wigan on loan for the rest of the season. Hogan, 26, is yet to score this term after falling out of favour at Villa Park. The Republic of Ireland international’s only start came in the FA Cup defeat to Swansea earlier this month, while he has been restricted to just six appearances off the bench in the Championship. He…

Manchester United 2-2 Burnley: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer maintains unbeaten start thanks to stoppage time equaliser from Victor Lindelof
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s winning start may have come to an end but Manchester United’s storming two-goal comeback at the death against Burnley meant all was not lost. Most onlookers expected the Norwegian to comfortably seal a ninth straight win in all competitions – and a record-breaking seventh at the start of a Premier League reign – but Sean Dyche’s men had other ideas. Solskjaer’s United had not so much as gone behind before Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood scored for Burnley, who were dreaming of a first win at Old Trafford since 1962 until Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof sealed a dramatic 2-2 draw. The overriding feeling was frustration for…

Arsenal transfer news: How Gunners could line-up with Ivan Perisic, Christopher Nkunku and Denis Suarez
Arsenal’s season is wobbling and their recent poor form continued on Friday night as they exited the FA Cup by losing to Manchester United. It’s now five losses in 10 games across all competitions with a patched up defence attempting to get the Gunners through their tough time. But now it seems manager Unai Emery is set to enter the transfer market to try and get things right at the Emirates. Rather than spend defensively, though, the Spaniard looks likely to sign a winger and a versatile midfielder, according to the latest reports. Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic has handed in a transfer request and could now join the Gunners…

Eden Hazard: Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri hammered by talkSPORT hosts for saying star is ‘not a leader’
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has been heavily criticised on talkSPORT for saying star man Eden Hazard is ‘not a leader’ in his latest public outburst. The Italian, who openly slammed his side’s attitude and mentality following last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal, has grabbed the headlines again with his comments about the Belgian ace. Ahead of Thursday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham, Sarri admitted he was unsure of Hazard’s future at Stamford Bridge, and branded the star forward ‘more an individual player than a leader’. Hazard has scored 12 goals and registered ten assists this season, but Sarri wants him to contribute more. Asked if the 28-year-old frustrates…

Chelsea transfer news: Callum Hudson-Odoi ‘agrees to stay’ until summer amid Bayern Munich interest
Chelsea have reportedly convinced Callum Hudson-Odoi to stay at the club this month as they continue to resist interest from Bayern Munich. The 18-year-old submitted a transfer request over the weekend to try and force a move to the German champions. But the Mail Online reports that Hudson-Odoi has temporarily agreed to stay at the Blues after meetings between his representatives and club managing director Marina Granovskaia. Chelsea will now spend the next four months trying to persuade Hudson Odoi to stay beyond the summer and sign a new five-year deal worth £80,000 a week. Bayern have seen several bids for the talented teenage winger turned down and Chelsea have…

Tottenham news: Danny Murphy disagrees with Mauricio Pochettino’s claim regarding silverware and says winning trophies creates ‘more hunger and desire’
Danny Murphy has questioned Mauricio Pochettino’s comments that winning trophies only serves to build egos, insisting it creates an appetite to go on to win more silverware. Pochettino made the comments after Tottenham were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea, before Crystal Palace dumped them out of the FA Cup in the same week. “Again we’re going to have the debate whether a trophy will take the club to the next level,” he said. “I don’t agree with it. It only builds your ego. “The most important thing for Tottenham right now is to always be in the top four.” Murphy won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup…
