Montpellier struggling to sign Serge Aurier

As reported by Foot Mercato, Montpellier are already struggling in their efforts to sign soon-to-be free agent Serge Aurier as his Villarreal deal expires after an option for next season was not activated by the Spanish club.

The 29-year-old Ivorian defender is now looking for a new challenge after 24 matches in Spain this season, and Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin is especially interested in the player but a deal to sign him is becoming complicated say the outlet.

The right-back is expecting to receive better offers, both in terms of the level of club and salary after taking €1.5m net at Villarreal this season, a wage well beyond Montpellier’s means as it stands.

L’Équipe reported yesterday that the club are already prioritising the signing of former Saint-Étienne loanee Falaye Sacko (27) over Aurier and ex-Marseille defender Hiroki Sakai in their search for a right-back. The club are also in advanced talks to sign Tunisian striker Wahbi Khazri (31) from Les Verts this summer.
