Aside from winning the match, the goal from Ruidiaz helped Morelia move up in the table enough to make the Liguilla, the mini-tournament playoffs for Liga MX, and saved the side from being relegated.

After Monterrey’s Dorlan Pabon converted a penalty to bring the score level, it appeared Monarcas would be sent down to the Ascenso. But the extra two points from Ruidiaz’s late goal put Monarcas a point above Chiapas in Mexico’s system, which takes the last six tournaments into account, keeping them in the first division.

It also may end up being the goal that wins him the scoring title. Ruidiaz moves to nine goals, currently putting him in the lead for the Golden Boot, with Pumas forward Nicolas Castillo, who is on eight goals, set to play Sunday.
