Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp hopeful Virgil van Dijk will be fit to face Leicester City

Liverpool are hopeful Virgil van Dijk will be fit for their Premier League match with Leicester City on Wednesday.

The Netherlands international is recovering from an illness he picked up following Liverpool’s trip to Dubai last week.

The 27-year-old was absent from the Reds’ Monday night training session at Melwood because of the sickness.

But he was well enough to train on Tuesday and Jurgen Klopp is upbeat about his chances of featuring at Anfield.

“Virg was a little bit ill but he trained yesterday. He will train today and then we will see,” said the Reds boss.

Klopp has had a number of injury issues but most of the short-term problems have cleared up just in time.

“Dejan (hamstring) is fine. Gini (Wijnaldum) trained, Fabinho will train today. Trent (Alexander-Arnold) getting closer and closer – looks all very positive – but will not be ready for tomorrow.”

Liverpool are currently four points ahead of Manchester City, who play on Tuesday night against Newcastle.

Provisional squad to face Leicester: Alisson, Fabinho, Van Dijk, Lovren, Robertson, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Shaqiri, Firmino, Mane, Salah, Mignolet, Matip, Moreno, Lallana, Keita, Sturridge, Origi, Camacho.
