When the former West Ham man returned to Marseille in the January window, he signed for €29m on a 4.5 year contract. FIFA rules dictate that this is the maximum amount of time one can sign a deal for in the January window.
To bypass that, the player’s agent Jacques-Olivier Auguste struck a deal with Marseille representatives to instigate an automatic contract extension once the summer window kicks in so that in effect he signed for 5.5 years in January.
The 30-year-old’s new contract therefore runs until 2022. Payet will be 35 if he decides to run his entire deal through.
