Virat couldn’t drive, I chauffeured him around a few times: Usman Khawaja reveals his first meeting with Virat Kohli

Australia batter Usman Khawaja revealed the reason behind receiving a Virat Kohli signed India kit as memorabilia on the penultimate day of the India-Australia Test series earlier in March.

In a video shared by FoxCricket on Instagram, the Australia international said that he thought the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy would be his final game against the former India skipper and so he got a momento to cherish it.

“All the way back then so I felt like it might be one of the last times I play against him, probably would be the second last time if we play him once more so I got a nice momento for that,” revealed Khawaja.

Khawaja also shared his first meeting with Virat and how he became good friends with the latter.

“I have known Virat since I was 19 when I went to a cricket academy in Brisbane the first time he was actually one of the players that came from India,” he said.

“I was driving around the bus where he was going and he couldn’t drive so I would DD for him a few times, and became good mates with him,” he added.

Earlier in that series, Australian players had also gifted a signed kit to Cheteshwar Pujara on his 100th Test in Delhi, a gesture similar to what the Ajinkya Rahane-led Indian side had for Nathan Lyon in the previous Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2020/21 in Australia.
