Six Nations: Can you name the 2009 Grand Slam winning Ireland team?

Ireland won the Six Nations for the first time in 2009, ending a 24-year wait for a Championship.

In his Six Nations Championship in charge, Declan Kidney led Ireland to their first title in the professional era and first Grand Slam since 1948.

Progression through the Championship

Kidney came into the role after Eddie O’Sullivan’s resignation the year before.

Ireland kicked off their campaign with a 30-21 victory over France before defeating Italy 38-9 in Rome a week later.

A late penalty was needed to down England 14-13 at Croke Park in Round Three of the Championship as the charge towards the Grand Slam started to gain momentum.

Next up, Chris Paterson kicked five penalties to keep Scotland in the match against Ireland at Murrayfield, but Ireland’s marksman, Ronan O’Gara, ultimately undid them.

After the 22-15 win over Scotland, that set up a Grand Slam decider date with Wales on Super Saturday.

Kidney’s side headed to Cardiff looking to create history and it was a date with the defending champions and Grand Slam winners from the year before in Wales.

Wales’ tournament

Warren Gatland had led Wales to Grand Slam glory in 2008, his first year in charge of the side, and were still in with a shot of defending their title on Super Saturday.

Wales raced through the opening two rounds, defeating Scotland and England, but France ended any hope of back-to-back Grand Slams in Paris in Round Three.

Thierry Dusautoir and Cedric Heymans both scored tries in the 21-16 win, but Gatland’s side bounced back in Round Four, beating Italy 20-15.

The match

Still in with a shot at the title, Wales and Ireland threw everything at it each other in the first half, with Stephen Jones kicking his side to a 6-0 lead at the break.

However, Ireland came out firing in the second half to secure the 17-15 victory, scoring two tries.

Wales finished in fourth place, while England claimed second place and won the Calcutta Cup, defeating Scotland on the final day.

France secured third place as Italy collected the Wooden Spoon, and Scotland finished just one place above them.
