England: Owen Farrell says Eddie Jones’ sacking is ‘unbelievably disappointing’

England skipper Owen Farrell has revealed that the Rugby Football Union’s recent decision to part ways with head coach Eddie Jones was “unbelievably disappointing”.

Jones was relieved of his duties after England finished an underwhelming Autumn Nations Series campaign with a 27-13 defeat against an under-strength Springbok side at Twickenham on November 26.

With that fixture falling outside the Test window, South Africa were without their European-based players but still handed their hosts their sixth loss of 2022.

That meant the Red Rose finished their worst campaign since 2008 as they delivered a losing Test record for the first time since that year, with their 12 matches ending with six those defeats, one draw and five victories.

Leicester Tigers boss Steve Borthwick is the favourite to succeed Jones, who lost his job after a seven-year reign, with the 2023 Rugby World Cup just nine months away and the Six Nations set to start in February.

Jones should not take all the blame

Farrell expressed his disappointment with Jones’ departure, saying he was not solely to blame for England’s poor performances.

“It’s unbelievably disappointing,” he told the BBC after Saracens’ Champions Cup victory over Edinburgh on Sunday.

“Eddie had been a big part of England rugby for a long time now, and he has been one of the best coaches I have ever had so, for that, I’m massively thankful.

“We are disappointed it has finished early, and we owe a lot to him.

“I have been around for a while now and not been around too many changes, both at club and international level. It’s not pleasant to go through.

“I don’t think it has come from the players. There is obviously stuff we all want to get better at from the results, but as players, you look at yourself and see what you can do.”
