Marseille’s Mattéo Guendouzi on facing PSG: “We will be ready.”
Speaking to the media in the wake of Marseille’s home defeat to Nice last night, Mattéo Guendouzi reflected on a match he believes his team deserved at least a draw from, all the while looking ahead to OM’s reception of Paris Saint-Germain in this week’s cup action.
The midfielder explains that Les Aiglons were “more clinical” in converting their chances in the 3-1 victory, which ended his side’s unbeaten run in the league since October. “We’ll keep going and work hard to be ready on Wednesday.”
The former Arsenal man also denied that the prospect of Wednesday’s Classique clash was at the back of his and his teammates’ minds during Sunday evening’s derby, and insisted that there were positive aspects to take from the performance nonetheless – “We did some good things, but it’s the details that matter at the highest level, and we lacked the finishing touch.” The loss puts Marseille eight points off the league leaders – who won against Toulouse the previous day – and level on points with fellow challengers Lens.
Looking ahead to their quick-fire double header against their Parisian rivals, Guendouzi says that Marseille will need to improve on the counter against a side that will cause them problems in defence – “They have quality players who can score at any time. […] It’s not because we lost this match that we’d be less confident for Wednesday. We’re going to approach this match well and we’ll be ready.”
