Savea absolutely butchered an almost-brilliant Super Rugby try

THE HURRICANES LOST for the first time in Super Rugby this season earlier today, as Michael Cheika’s Waratahs emerged from Wellington with a 29-24 win.

A double from Peter Betham as well as further tries from Will Skelton and Isreal Folau did most of the damage for the Tahs, with out-half Bernard Foley kicking the remaining nine points from the tee.

Conrad Smith, Beauden Barrett, Brad Shields and TJ Perenara all dotted down for the Canes, but they might be rueing the major missed opportunity they had this morning too.

It came early on in the game after the dynamic Ardie Savea, younger brother of All Blacks try machine Julian, burst through the Australian franchise’s defence for what looked like a certain try.

What followed is the worst nightmare of many a potential try scorer as Savea somehow managed to botch the finish.

Clearly this was not the only reason the Hurricanes lost, but Savea certainly won’t enjoy watching the footage back.

In this morning’s other completed Super Rugby fixture, the Blues’ woes continued as they lost 30-24 in a typically-entertaining clash with the Highlanders. International centre Malakai Fekitoa bagged a brace for the Landers, with the Clermont-bound Waisake Naholo also scoring a try.

The 100% place-kicking of Lima Sopoaga proved the difference, as the Highlanders out-half’s 15 points cancelled out tries from the Blues’ George Moala, Patrick Tuipulotu and Kevin Mealamu [2].

There were more unfortunate moments and missed opportunities for the Blues in a season that has seen them win just once so far.
