Major Update on Rey Mysterio’s Ongoing WWE Negotiations & Independent Dates He Still Wants to Fulfill

There has been a lot of conflicting information on the status of Rey Mysterio as it relates to his WWE return. It was first reported that he had signed a multi-year deal with the company, but that was quickly shot down from all angles.

The Wrestling Observer Reporter is noting that negotiations are still ongoing, and the two sides are still close enough that they’re discussing which independent obligations he still has, and which ones he’ll fulfill. The biggest date on his schedule right now is obviously ALL IN on September 1st, which is something he really wants to do. In particular, because on 5/13 they ran a press conference in Chicago to begin promotion for the show, and Mysterio was the major reveal at the end, and is arguably the biggest mainstream name attached to the card.

In addition, the Observer is reporting that Mysterio also wants a chance to drop the Crash Heavyweight Championship, which he won back in May during a triple threat with Bestia 666 and Pentagon Jr. The promotion was founded by Konnan, who has been close with Rey for decades, so it makes sense that he would want to do right by his friend instead of just vacating the title for the money.

We have heard from once source within WWE that there was initially interest in bringing him in for a match at SummerSlam, but obviously if he’s committed to doing the ALL IN show on 9/1 that more or less rules out a return for the pay-per-view on 8/19. The Crash has shows scheduled for 7/14 which Mysterio isn’t currently booked for, and 7/29, so there are opportunities to make the title change if/when he works out a specific return date with WWE.

While not a certainty, one would think that if WWE were interested in making a big money offer, big enough to muscle him out of his remaining indie dates, that they would have already done it by now.

Rey Mysterio was recently announced as the returning legend for this year’s WWE 2K19 video game, due out in October. It”s likely that at the very least they will want him back on television before that to promote the game, but as is always the case with returning legends in the past (Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Goldberg, Sting, etc.) those deals were all worked out between 2K Sports and the wrestler directly.
