Chelsea star Willian targeted in FA Cup clash as Sheffield Wednesday fans appear to launch objects at Brazilian
Sheffield Wednesday fans appeared to throw various objects at Willian after his penalty during the FA Cup fourth round clash at Stamford Bridge.
Images show the Chelsea forward covering his face to shield himself from the missiles, while a pair of goggles and a coin were later seen on the pitch.
The travelling fans were irate after the video assistant referee denied them a penalty just seconds before Chelsea were awarded one of their own.
Referee Andre Marriner pointed to the spot after Ethan Ampadu’s challenge on Joey Pelpupessy, but replays showed the Blues midfielder played the ball.
And then a minute later, Sam Hutchinson was penalised for a stamp on Cesar Azpilicueta inside the box, with Willian making no mistake from the spot.
As he wheeled away to celebrate in front of the 6,000 Owls fans at Stamford Bridge, he can be seen protecting his face and objects were later pictured on the pitch.
The incident comes just days after a coin was thrown in the direction Manchester United players during their 3-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates.
Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners to cruise into the fifth round as Callum Hudson-Odoi scored his second Blues goal and Willian completed his brace after the earlier penalty.
Hudson-Odoi has been heavily-linked with a move to Bayern Munich and reportedly handed in a transfer request yesterday.
And he showed precisely why the Germans want to sign him after he was picked out by Andreas Christensen and took two superb touches before firing past the Owls keeper.
Then Willian bagged his second, combining brilliantly with Olivier Giroud before curling an inch-perfect strike into the far-right corner.
